About Healthy Food for All

Healthy Food for All is an initiative seeking to address diet-related ill-health and to ensure that everyone on the island of Ireland has access to healthy, affordable food.

The vision of the initiative is:

"An Ireland where no individual is denied a nutritious diet for reasons of affordability or accessibility."

History of Healthy Food for All

The publication and extensive dissemination of the Food Poverty and Policy Report highlighted the issue of food poverty as one of major concern for food and nutrition policy in Ireland.  The findings of the report were debated with the Oireachtas, the food sector, HSE community dietitians, anti-poverty organisations, government departments (health, agriculture and social welfare), local authorities and other interests.

In line with the recommendations of the report a feasibility study was undertaken on the establishment of a network of community food initiatives.  The results of this study were debated at a roundtable of key interests in April 2005.  There was broad support at the roundtable for the establishment of the Healthy Food for All initiative.  A number of follow-up discussions with other interests were held in order to refine the proposal for the establishment of an initiative to address food poverty.

Funding was received for the establishment of the initiative. Crosscare agreed to house the initiative in its' developmental phase.  A project co-ordinator was employed in September 2006.  The co-ordinator is supported by a management committee and an advisory committee.  In 2008 Healthy Food for All was awarded funding by safefood to set up a Demonstration Programme of Community Food Initiatives.
