| European Commission proposes School Fruit Scheme worth €90 million per year |

08/07/08 Healthy Food for All welcomes the European Commission proposal to provide free fruit and vegetables to schoolchildren.
European funds worth €90 million every year would pay for the purchase and distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables to schools in Europe. The Commission is also proposing that Member States opting to participate in the EU Scheme will be required to match the EU funding and to set up additional national strategies including educational and awareness-raising initiatives. This is the latest stage in the Commission's efforts to improve health and nutrition, as set out in the 'Strategy for Europe on Nutrition, Overweight and Obesity and related health issues'.
