EU response to rise in food prices

Ireland has the second highest food costs in the EU. Food prices in Ireland have risen by more than twice the rate of inflation over the past year. In addition the latest figures from the pdf Central Statistics Office showed that the price of food rose by 7.8% while the overall rate of inflation was 4.7%.

Some of the biggest prices increases have been recorded for staple food items that are present in the food baskets of most consumers including milk, flour, butter and eggs. Milk, cheese and eggs and breads and cereals registered price increases of 22% and 11.9% respectively from April 2007-April 2008.

The European Commission has recently adopted a proposal setting out potential policy responses to mitigate the effects of rising global food prices. Please click here for more details.
