What is a Community Food Initiative?

Community Food Initiatives (CFIs) provide an excellent opportunity to combat food poverty.  Community Food Initiatives (CFI) address the issues of access, availability and affordability and can be any initiative dealing with food – its quality, cost, availability, growing, cooking, eating, transportation.

There are numerous examples of CFIs nationwide, which include food growing projects, community cafes, food co-ops, food banks, markets, School Meal Schemes, nutrition education and training schemes.

Healthy Food for All is currently producing two Good Practice Guides, one on Community Food Projects and the other on School Food Initiatives. The guides will act as a resource for community groups/schools/voluntary organisations/local planners and health professionals interested in undertaking a food initiative.  If you would like to have an input into the development of this guide or would like your project to be profiled as an example of good practice in food provision send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . Healthy Food for All are also developing an online directory of community food initiatives on the island of Ireland. Email us with details of your project to be included in this online resource.

HFfA has recently been awarded funding from Safefood to establish a Demonstration Programme on Community Food Initiatives (CFIs) which will provide funding for a limited number of CFIs over a three-year period. To find out more about the programme, click here.
